Love Notes for Your Partner: What to Write When You Don't Know What to Say

You want to leave your partner a love note. Then you pick up the pen and forget every meaningful thought you have ever had.

Good news: it does not need to be profound. A good love note is usually specific, believable, and written the way you actually talk. Here is what to write, where to hide it, and why a few honest words do more than you would think.

A note they did not expect is also one of the simplest ways to bring the spark back. It is a small surprise in an ordinary day, and surprise is part of what made things feel exciting in the first place.

Why specific notes work

Researchers at the University of North Carolina recorded couples thanking each other and found something useful: when the person saying thanks praised their partner, not just the favor, the partner felt more loving afterward. In other words, "Thanks for making dinner" is nice. "Thank you for making dinner. You always notice when I've had a long day" is better, because it is about them.

Another study by the same lead researcher, Sara Algoe, found that everyday moments of gratitude between partners predicted feeling more connected and satisfied the next day. For both of them.

What to write in a love note

Tell them what you love about them

Instead of "I love you so much," try something only they would recognize:

  • "I love how you can make me laugh even when I am in a terrible mood."
  • "I love how excited you get when you talk about something you care about."
  • "I love the life we have built together."

Specific feels personal.

Tell them what you appreciate

Gratitude makes a great love note because it notices something real.

  • "Thank you for always making coffee before I am fully functioning."
  • "I noticed how much you did this week. Thank you."
  • "You make our home feel like home."

Encourage them

Not every love note needs to be romantic. Support is part of love too.

  • "You've got this."
  • "I know today is a big one. I'm rooting for you."
  • "I believe in you even when you are doubting yourself."

Make them laugh

Your note does not have to sound like a greeting card. Use an inside joke. Reference something ridiculous. Tease them a little. Something only the two of you would understand can feel more intimate than any big romantic line. That kind of private humor is part of what keeps a couple friends and not just partners.

Flirt with them

Long-term relationships are allowed to be playful.

  • "You looked ridiculously good this morning."
  • "Cancel your plans tonight. I have ideas."
  • "I still have a crush on you."

Remind them of a memory

  • "I was thinking about that weekend in..."
  • "I still laugh every time I remember..."
  • "Remember when we..."

Shared memories make a message feel like it belongs only to your relationship.

Tell them what you are looking forward to

  • "I can't wait for our trip."
  • "I can't wait to have you to myself this weekend."
  • "I can't wait to see what the next year brings us."

Love notes do not only have to look backward.

Keep it short

A love note can be one sentence. That is often better. You are not writing wedding vows every Tuesday morning. You are creating a small interruption in your partner's day that says: I see you. I appreciate you. I want you. I am rooting for you. I was thinking about you.

Where to hide a love note

Part of the fun is putting it somewhere unexpected. The location can make an ordinary message feel like a surprise.

Spot Why it works
Inside their laptop They find it at the start of the workday
Beside their coffee A good first thing to read
In their suitcase A piece of home while they are away
On the bathroom mirror Hard to miss, easy to smile at
Inside a book they are reading They find it days later
In their gym bag or jacket pocket A surprise in the middle of the day
On the steering wheel Something for the commute
Under their pillow The last thing they see before sleep

What if you really do not know what to write?

That exact problem is one of the reasons we created Hidden Gems. My wife Jenn and I loved the idea of leaving little messages for each other, but coming up with the right thing to say every time is harder than it sounds.

Pink Hidden Gems box next to an orange card back, a Gratitude card, a teal Support card and a white Love card that reads You're the best thing that ever happened to me

Hidden Gems is 72 pre-written love notes across four categories: Love, Support, Gratitude, and Fun & Flirty. Choose one that fits the day, hide it somewhere your partner will find it, and let the card do the talking. A few of the real cards: "Thanks for being my rock." "I appreciate everything you do for us. Big and small." "We just said goodbye, but I miss you already." "You're my favorite weirdo, and I wouldn't have it any other way."

The goal is not to outsource what you feel. It is to make saying it easier, so a busy week does not mean the notes stop.

The best love note sounds like you

Do not worry about making it beautiful enough. Do not copy something poetic you would never actually say. Write what is true. Five honest words from the person you love can mean more than a page written by someone else. If things have felt a little flat lately, that is normal, and we wrote about it in why your marriage feels boring (and why that is not the real problem). FAQ

What should I write in a love note to my partner?

One specific, true thing: something you love about them, something you appreciate, or something you are looking forward to. Make it about them, not just about what they did.

How long should a love note be?

One to three sentences is plenty. Short notes are easier to write and they feel natural, not like homework.

How often should I leave love notes?

Whatever you can keep up. Once a week is a nice rhythm. Unexpected timing matters more than frequency.

Is it cheesy to use pre-written love notes?

Not if you pick one that is true. The card gives you the words, and you choose the moment and the hiding spot. You can always add a line of your own on the back.
